Six human rights activists jailed

İSTANBUL – Six human rights activists in ten who were taken into custody on July 5th during annual meeting were jailed in Istanbul.




10 human rights activists included Turkey Office Director of Amnesty Idil Eser had been sent into courthouse yesterday evening on July 17. After eight hours questioned by prosecution, all activists were sent to court board on claim of ‘propaganda for illegal organization’.



Amnesty Turkey Office’s Director İdil Eser, Özlem Dalkıran, Veli Acu, Günal Kurşun, Ali Garavi and Peter Steudtner were jailed on claim of ‘aiding to illegal organization’. The rest of activists named Nalan Erkem, Şeyhmus Özbekli, Nejat Taştan and İlknur Üstün were released by juridical control decision.




Despite activists were accused ‘propaganda for illegal organization’, neither prosecution nor court board mentioned name of the ‘illegal organization’.
